I welcome you to the College of Medicine-Jeddah (COM-J), King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS). Our university is unique on two aspects. Firstly it specializes in health sciences that include colleges of medicine, nursing, public health and health informatics, applied medical sciences, science and health professions, dentistry, and pharmacy across three campuses in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al-Ahsa. Secondly it adapted an innovative approach to education known as Problem Based Learning (PBL).
Increasingly, more medical schools are adopting PBL. The aim of any medical school is to produce graduates that master the required knowledge, skills and attitude that enable them to be safe and competent doctors. Compared to traditional approaches to medical education, curricula that are based on PBL concepts are more likely to produce quality physicians. The main pillars of PBL are integration of the various subjects of the curriculum, enforcing self directed learning techniques upon the students and having them utilize key problem solving techniques. All of these are achieved through intensive group-learning sessions.
We are proud of the quality and scope of our curriculum, both in the preparatory phase and the four-year medical program. I welcome all our new students and faculty, wishing them a productive time at our college.
Prof. Hassan S. Baaqeel, MBBS, FRCSC, FRCOG.
