Department of Basic Sciences

The Department of Basic Sciences offers the Pre-Professional Preparatory Program to students enrolled in the College of Medicine at  King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences-Jeddah. The program provides the foundation courses in basic sciences and medical sciences necessary for the students.

Our faculty members view science education as a cumulative experience involving both classroom instruction and practical laboratory work utilizing the latest technology. Currently, the Department of Basic Sciences has a growing number of world-caliber faculty members, who support the university in achieving its curricular goals.

The department members include teaching faculty for basic science courses, in addition to the English section which has several English language instructors. The department also includes teaching faculty for Arabic language, Islamic values, medical ethics, and health profession education.

The Preparatory Program offers basic science courses such as chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, behavioral science, and basic medical sciences courses including biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, and basic pharmacology. The English language teaching faculty,meanwhile, provide the students with comprehensive training in general and academic English.

Presently, our Preparatory Program in the Basic Sciences Department offers only one stream, stream I (for high school graduates), which spans two years. It caters to the needs of these students and helps them adapt to a university setting. 

In the coming years, we anticipate to have stream II (for college graduate students), which will have a shorter span, and provide the students with basic skills in university education together with a condensed English language program.

It is our belief that innovative educational opportunities help define and build a solid foundation for medical students, which in the long term, promotes patient and community health care. Laying down the basic foundation is an essential and integral part of preparing the students for their future education in the university.
